Inclusive Sanitation Program.

“When we were in school, there used to be a long line for the toilet. The condition of that toilet was so unhygienic that I used to go back home to use the toilet during class periods. It was a 15-minute walk from school, and I often missed classes because of it," pointed out Hawa Khatun, a student of ABS High School in Mongla. This was a common scenario for many girls at ABS School. The school had a small toilet for girls which was really unhealthy.

The Community Development Centre (CODEC) addressed this critical issue by building a separate toilet for the girls as part of the Showpner Thikana Project, supported by ERIKS Development Partner. This aesthetically designed toilet, developed through a participatory approachapproach, is well-ventilated to allow ample air and light to pass through the building.

The new facility is well-equipped and includes a hygiene corner where sanitary napkins are provided at minimal cost. It is also designed to be disability-friendly, featuring ramp access and other universal access features to ensure inclusivity.

Recognizing the importance of this new facility, the School Management Committee (SMC) and the school administration took additional steps to enhance accessibility. They constructed a road from the classrooms to the toilet, facilitating easy access for all students.

This transformation is not just about infrastructure; it’s about empowering girls and ensuring they have the dignity and support they deserve to thrive in their education.

CODEC has already established similar toilets in schools across the coastal areas of Bangladesh and plans to continue these efforts. By doing so, they are creating a safer and more supportive educational environment, helping girls to stay in school and focus on their studies without the distraction of inadequate sanitation facilities.
